A statement from the Bern Security Dialogue

It has come to the attention of the Bern Security Dialogue that a freelancer for pro-Russian media outlet Weltwoche plans to publish a conspiratorial tome this week where our organization and leadership are the target of baseless insinuations. The suggestion that a nefarious transnational network seeks to alter the course of a free and democratic nation through non-transparent means is absurd and inaccurate. We are proud to stand for peace and prosperity in Switzerland and in Europe, which depend greatly on freedom and security.
Given the wide-ranging commentary on matters of national, regional, European and international security affairs offered by our co-chairs over the years, there should be little mystery regarding our views and values and our respect for the sovereign will of free people in free nations. Regardless of the aspersions our detractors might try to cast on our efforts, we remain who we say we are. We have built an organization free of elite cronyism, inside dealing and other forms of corruption on par with international standards. Our professional and personal networks and affiliations are not a mystery nor a secret.
Our primary goal remains to elevate the discourse around security policy in Switzerland and the region to international standards. The Bern Security Dialogue sees Switzerland as a necessarily active participant in regional and European security at a time of tremendous pressure on Swiss and European institutions as a whole. We work so that Switzerland and Europe as a whole can be safe and secure and free of foreign attacks.
Ultimately, every nation is nothing more and nothing less than the sum of its people. How Switzerland as a nation responds to these efforts at hostile interference, in this case clearly backed by similar accusations from pro-Russian media and diplomatic channels, is entirely a matter for the Swiss people and the sovereign nation of Switzerland to determine. We are here to support a robust civil society, a capable military, free and democratic institutions.

Der Bern Security Dialogue hat erfahren, dass ein freier Autor der pro-russischen Zeitschrift «Weltwoche» diese Woche ein verschwörungstheoretisches Werk veröffentlicht, in dem unsere Organisation und unsere Co-Chairs Zielscheibe unbegründeter Unterstellungen sind. Die Behauptung, dass ein klandestines, transnationales Netzwerk versuche, die Politik einer freien und demokratischen Nation mit undurchsichtigen Mitteln zu beeinflussen, ist absurd. Wir sind stolz darauf, uns in der Schweiz und in Europa für Frieden in Freiheit und Wohlstand einzusetzen. Beides hängt unmittelbar von der Fähigkeit ab, sich selbst verteidigen zu können.
Angesichts der zahlreichen und öffentlichen Stellungnahmen unserer Co-Chairs zu Fragen der nationalen, regionalen, europäischen und internationalen Sicherheit im Laufe der Jahre dürfte es offensichtlich sein, welche Ansichten und Werte wir vertreten und wie sehr wir den freien Willen freier Menschen in freien Nationen respektieren. Ungeachtet der Verleumdungen, mit denen unsere Kritiker unsere Bemühungen zu diskreditieren versuchen, bleiben wir, wer wir sind. Wir haben eine Organisation aufgebaut, die frei von Vetternwirtschaft, Insidergeschäften und anderen Formen der Korruption ist und internationalen Standards entspricht. Unsere beruflichen und persönlichen Netzwerke und Verbindungen sind kein Geheimnis.
Unser vorrangiges Ziel bleibt es, den Diskurs über die Sicherheitspolitik in der Schweiz und der Region zu fördern. Der Bern Security Dialogue betrachtet die Schweiz als einen unverzichtbaren aktiven Akteur in der regionalen und europäischen Sicherheitsarchitektur – gerade in einer Zeit, in der die schweizerischen und europäischen Institutionen insgesamt unter enormem Druck stehen. Wir setzen uns dafür ein, dass die Schweiz und Europa sicher und vor Angriffen aus dem Ausland geschützt sind.
Letztendlich ist jede Nation nicht mehr und nicht weniger als die Summe, aller, die hier leben. Wie die Schweiz als Nation auf diese Versuche gegnerischer Einmischung reagiert – die in diesem Fall eindeutig durch ähnliche Anschuldigungen aus pro-russischen Medien und diplomatischen Kanälen untermauert werden –, ist ausschliesslich Sache der Schweiz als souveräner Staat und ihrer Bevölkerung. Wir sind angetreten, um eine starke Zivilgesellschaft, ein leistungsfähiges Militär sowie freie und demokratische Institutionen zu unterstützen.
